Winter Toy Safety

Even though winter looks very different across our country, this time of year does tend to have some similar themes: snow, ice, and cold. And even if we think of ourselves as safety conscious, we may still need a little reminder or two about the subject before we let the kids go out there.

Here are a few quick things to keep in mind. If this is your child’s first year sledding, skiing, skating, or just hanging out in the ice and snow, they may need some serious explanations of the safest, smartest ways to use their sleds, skis, skates, and other winter products. Don’t just assume they “get it,” explain how things work before they watch other kids misuse items.

Likewise, if your child has been using the items for years, he or she may have gotten sloppy or may turn into a daredevil after shooting out the door. Even teenagers get killed using products incorrectly, so try to have a conversation with them about how “extreme” they are getting. Put special emphasis on safety gear and staying away from traffic, frozen-over ponds, and alcohol.

Of course, there are so many things to keep in mind this time of year. But maybe number one should be that you can’t take anything for granted. Teach the lessons, say the words, and brave the rolled eyes and arrogant shoulder shrugs. More likely than not, the messages of safety will sink in, and you may well have saved your child’s life.
