This week’s recalls—Battat Magnabild Magnetic Building Systems because of loose magnets and Big Wooden Blocks and Jumbo Wooden Train Sets sold at Christmas Tree Shops because of lead paint—are serious reminders that the work of toy safety is not yet done.
Maybe the news has died down a bit and perhaps the recalls are fewer and farther between, but they still keep coming, illustrating that there is obvious no quick fix to this issue. As we move further into 2008 the number of lead related recalls should start to fizzle (we hope) as the manufacturers have theoretically addressed the issue and the only toys still causing problems are ones that were distributed before public attention was drawn to the toy safety issue. The new recalls also reiterate the mission of SafeToys.com. We want to remain clear that we believe toy safety is an ongoing issue, and should not be subject to the hype and old-news treatment common to many media outlets. You’ll hardly hear a peep about recalls from the local news station now that the buying season has concluded.
Our goal is to give clear and useful information and let you know when you need to worry about a toy or safety issue and when you don’t.
