Now that holiday gift buying is done for 2007, you might find yourself looking around at all the toys your kids have received and begin wondering if they really need all of them.
Toys are fun. Some are educational, and others are shiny and do cool things. But how many toys do your kids need? What would it mean to a child who has no toys to receive something even after Santa has gone back to the North Pole?
Consider helping your child to learn the concept of giving to others by choosing some toys – or even just one – from the pile of gifts they received and giving them/it to another child. You can donate to a local shelter, to the victims of the wildfires in California, to the thousands of people whose holidays were ruined by the terrible weather in the Midwest or maybe to the families still reeling from Hurricane Katrina. Every region has charitable organizations that need help all year round and would be very happy to deliver your toy to a needy child.
The best toy is not only safe; it is also valued. There is so much need here in our country, need that we often do not see in the rush of daily life. But the need exists and your child can help fill that need with a selfless act of decency that may stand as the foundation of a life of citizenship, kindness, and brotherhood. Parents need just extend a guiding hand.
